Jennifer Stenberg's story

Subject: celiac disease & SCD

I went to a Special Diets support group meeting at a local hospital. I was hoping to find another SCDer. It was a small group and with the exception of one,(a mom with an autistic son) had celiac disease. They gave me a huge folder of information. Boy, I am jealous, they can eat A LOT! Of course all the pamphlets of gluten-free vendors are of no use to an SCDer because of all the rice flour and sugar. My question is, SCD is also for people with celiac disease...although some things on the celiac no-no list are SCD allowable. Vinegar is one, and I think I read green beans.....can't figure that one out. Do we have anyone with celiac disease on our list? Also, celiac disease is often mis-diagnosed and it is believed to be on the rise. The leader at the meeting questioned whether I had celiac as well. I don't think I do. (I do have UC) I can't have the blood test now because I haven't been eating grains....so it won't show the antibodies. Anyone with information, please let me know. I am just trying to learn more about this stuff!

Hi Lori, Don't be jealous of the coeliac diet!! it doesn't actually help coeliacs a great deal in my experience. A friend of mine was coeliac and was seeing consultants, pschychiatrists and neurologists for years. She was having heaps of "Gluten Free" foods like breads, pasties, cakes, biscuits etc. I gave her a copy of BTVC and she's been following it religiously for over a year now, and she is now totally symptom free and no longer needs to see so many "experts" just the usual check up with the gastroenterologist.

She is so delighted with the results, especially having normal bm's, before SCD she had one [bm] a fortnight...which must have been unbelievable agony.... I was tested -negative- for coeliac. Blood test, no antibodies, but have all the symptoms which manifest themself in diverticular disease. I have read, I think in Dr. Kalle Reichellts webpages, that there is such a thing as "symtpom-free" coeliac disease, maybe Elaine would know?? After 3 years on SCD I am fine but any little relapse results in return of sympoms, bleeding etc. and grain especially wheat is the worst offender. Pre-SCD I would have had no way of knowing that grain was a problem because, apart from being totally hooked on bread, it takes between 4 and 6 days after eating it for the physical symptoms to reappear, though the "brain fog" is immediate. Does anyone else have this problem, desperate carbo addiction which can only, like alcoholism, be avoided by NEVER cheating?
cheers, annie
